The New Presence Journalism Internship Program

The Internship Program

The New Presence internship program is geared for college-level students and runs for approximately three and a half months, in conjunction with the students' academic semester. During this period, students get first-hand exposure in the production of the region’s premier English-language magazine publication, The New Presence, one of several publications of the Martin Jan Stránský publishing house

The internship program offers direct exposure to magazine journalism as well as  immersion in the key political, economic, social and cultural issues shaping the region's development which form the core of the magazine’s reporting and analysis.

The program is supervised by a dedicated editor who supervises all interns. The program has active contracts with institutions such as New York University, Toronto University, University of New York in Prague, Anglo-American University, and Charles University, Prague.

In preparation for the internship, students are required to read through past issues of The New Presence, and to submit examples of their writing. Daily reading of Central European and global news media (Internet access is a necessity) is also mandatory.

Objectives: Upon completion of this internship, students should be able to:

1. Research and write a 1500 word in-depth investigative article examining a regional issue.

2. Conduct research and effective interviews with individuals from various sectors of society.

3. Understand the roles that journalists and the newsprint media play in society and the differences between journal writing and newspaper writing.

4. Copy-edit article translations to read well in English while maintaining the author’s original meaning.

5. Evaluate their own and other news media critically.

6. Participate in peer editing sessions.

Content of the Internship

1. Building and planning a print publication

2. Reporting skills

3. Effective interviewing

4. Structuring and writing stories

5. Copy-editing

Internship Requirements

All students receive a syllabus outlining weekly activities (see enclosure). Meetings are held once a week with the Program Editor for approximately one to two hours, and with the rest of the editorial staff on an ad-hoc basis. Students are expected to complete the assigned tasks for each meeting.  Students meet with the publisher at the beginning and end of the program.

Each student is expected to participate in the planning, writing and production of The New Presence. Each student is required to conduct his/her own article or group article, as well as participate in “second jobs” (copy-editing, supplemental research for other articles, peer review and editing, etc.).
